A visit to the Garden of the Gods
by eNoBlog on Jun.13, 2010, under Story-telling, Travel
I recently had a chance to hike for a couple of hours through the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, CO. Very nice lighting bathed the large rock formations. My first impulse was to capture it all, and multi-frame panoramas seemed one good way to approach the subject. Here are three samples.
Panoramas are often challenging compositionally. They tend to throw everything in and leave the viewer wondering what the point of the photo is or who/what is the subject. Sometimes, however, they provide the best method to capture wide vistas.
The D700 goes to town

I finally took my D700 for a spin around town, downtown Los Angeles to be specific. This is an area I have mined for compositions before, and I was a little doubtful I would be able to find additional ones. The weather was pretty “even,” meaning the usual boring, sunny, cloudless skies — or alternatively, the kind of climate some would kill for right now. For the most part, I didn’t find anything terribly impressive, but I did satisfy my main goal to get acquainted with my new Nikon D700 and see how it played with my also newly acquired Nikon 17-35 f/2.8.
I found the area around Disney Hall the most productive, and here are two of my favorite shots from the day.
So far so good. The D700′s lower noise performance in low ISOs, even in blue skies, came in handy especially for the B&W conversion, where the sky was processed with a red filter. I’m looking forward to more spins around town with the D700.
Bahamas, mahn!

Nothing gets a shutterbug’s juices going like a chance to shoot a new location. I was blessed with such an opportunity over the past few days, at the Bahamas, no less. As soon as the plane flew over the first island on the way in, memories of aqua blues and light tan beaches became reality. On the second day there, with stormy weather to create drama in otherwise lovely blue skies, I was able to capture these two images with my Nikon D80 and Nikkor 10-24 at 10mm.

Of course, I had to give Channel mixer another go with these to see how a B&W treatment would work with these. Much to my surprise, lovely tropical colors notwithstanding, the B&W versions capture the stormy mood much more poignantly. What do you think?
