Returning to the scene of the crime

No matter how good a photo experience you have, it seems like after photographing a location you won’t soon revisit, lingering questions remain. If I had only shot it from this other angle, or if I had gone back early in the morning or late in the day, or if I had waited for the light to be just so…
I experienced this sort of second-guessing on a recent trip to one of my favorite spots on earth, Hume Lake, California. I came back with a few keepers, but I still had doubts as to whether I could have done better.

A couple of weeks later, I had the chance to return. This time I had decided to make 4×5, 3 panel stitched compositions (using a technique I’ll describe in a future blog entry), and for the 2nd shot, to take the photo at a different time of day to see the difference.

The results weren’t astonishing better, perhaps reassuring me I did better the first time around than I thought, but I am glad I had a chance to go back and try a few new things and explore the subject with some different things in mind. I am particularly pleased with the more expansive perspective 4×5 compositions give and I will definitely be repeating it in the future.

Very nice photos, Eno. Amazing what time of day will do.
